How to reconcile your Form 1099-DA

Learn how to upload, review, reconcile, and report Form 1099-DA data in Coinpanda, including resolving differences and generating Form 8949.

Written by Eivind Semb

Form 1099-DA reports proceeds from certain digital asset sales and other dispositions to you and the IRS. If you received a Form 1099-DA from an exchange or broker, Coinpanda can help you reconcile the information reported on the form with the transactions imported into your Coinpanda account.

Reconciliation helps you identify and resolve missing transactions, reporting differences, and other inconsistencies before generating your tax reports.

🌐 For US taxpayers only

Form 1099-DA is a US tax form. This reconciliation feature is intended for US taxpayers who received Form 1099-DA from a digital asset broker or exchange.

Before you start

Before reconciling your Form 1099-DA, make sure your Coinpanda transaction history is complete and accurate. We recommend that you:

  • Add all exchanges and wallets you used during the tax year, including accounts that did not issue a Form 1099-DA.

  • Make sure your transactions have been fully imported.

  • Review transactions with warnings or missing information.

  • Make sure transfers between your own accounts and wallets are classified correctly and not treated as disposals.

The reconciliation compares your 1099-DA with the transactions currently in your Coinpanda account. Missing or incorrectly classified transactions can therefore cause differences between the two.

How 1099-DA reconciliation works

The reconciliation process consists of four steps:

Step 1: Upload your 1099-DA

Upload the Form 1099-DA PDF you received from your exchange or broker. Coinpanda will validate the document and extract the reported data from the PDF.

šŸ’”Multiple 1099-DA forms

If you received more than one Form 1099-DA, add and reconcile each form separately in Coinpanda.

Step 2: Review the extracted data

Review the extracted data and make sure it matches your original Form 1099-DA, including proceeds, cost basis, gains and losses, and reported sales.

Step 3: Reconcile your data

Coinpanda compares the information extracted from your 1099-DA with the transactions imported into your Coinpanda account. You can compare proceeds, identify differences by asset and date, review which of your Coinpanda disposals were reported on Form 1099-DA, and correct issues where needed.

Step 4: Generate reports

Once you have reviewed and resolved any relevant differences, continue to generate your tax reports using the reconciled information.

The sections below explain each step in more detail.

Upload your 1099-DA

Start by selecting the exchange or broker that issued your Form 1099-DA, then upload the original PDF.

Coinpanda will first validate the document to make sure it is a supported Form 1099-DA for the selected tax year. Once validated, the document is processed and the reported data is extracted. Processing usually takes between 10 and 60 seconds, depending on the document. When processing is complete, you will be taken toĀ Review Data automatically.

If Coinpanda cannot validate or process the document, make sure you uploaded the original PDF from the exchange or broker you selected and that it is for the correct tax year. If the problem continues, contact Coinpanda support.

Review the extracted data

The Review Data page shows the information Coinpanda extracted from your uploaded Form 1099-DA. Compare it with your original PDF before continuing.

Summary of extracted data

The summary shows:

  • Rows extracted: number of sales rows found in the form

  • Reported proceeds: total proceeds reported on the form

  • Reported cost basis: total cost basis reported by the broker or exchange

  • Reported gain/loss: total gain or loss based on the reported data

Cost basis may only be available for some transactions, so missing cost basis does not necessarily mean the document was processed incorrectly.

Review reported sales

The 1099-DA reported sales table shows the rows extracted from your form, including asset, dates, units, proceeds, cost basis, gain/loss, and asset code.

Use the filters to review specific assets or dates. The category filter lets you display All categories, Qualifying stablecoins, or Other assets. Coinpanda identifies qualifying stablecoins from the information in your uploaded form. Other assets include any stablecoins not identified as qualifying.

Some brokers report qualifying stablecoin transactions as a combined annual total rather than individual sales. These rows are marked as aggregated and may show Various instead of a specific date. This reflects how the broker reported the transactions and does not mean the dates were lost during processing.

If any extracted data does not match your original Form 1099-DA, do not continue with reconciliation. Contact Coinpanda support and report the issue so we can update our parsing logic. The extracted data saved to Coinpanda should match your PDF exactly.

šŸ’”Re-process your 1099-DA

If Coinpanda has updated the parsing rules for your document, select Re-process 1099-DA to process the uploaded PDF again using the latest rules.

This replaces the previously extracted data and resets reconciliation changes based on the old results. Your uploaded PDF remains unchanged.

Reconcile your data

After reviewing the extracted data, select Continue to start reconciliation.

Coinpanda compares the information extracted from your Form 1099-DA with the transactions imported into your Coinpanda account. The goal is to identify and resolve relevant differences before generating your tax reports.

Compare reported and calculated proceeds

The Summary tab compares:

  • 1099-DA reported: values extracted from your uploaded Form 1099-DA

  • Coinpanda calculated: values calculated from your imported transactions

  • Proceeds difference: the difference between the two

Because proceeds are reported to the IRS on Form 1099-DA, comparing these amounts can help identify missing or incorrectly classified transactions. A difference does not necessarily mean that either your 1099-DA or your Coinpanda data is incorrect.

How qualifying stablecoins are compared

The Summary tab separates proceeds into Qualifying stablecoins and Other assets on both sides of the comparison. This makes it easier to see which category accounts for a difference.

Brokers using the optional reporting method for qualifying stablecoins generally exclude exchanges of those stablecoins for crypto assets that are not qualifying stablecoins. For example, exchanging a qualifying stablecoin for BTC may be excluded, while selling it for USD or exchanging it for another qualifying stablecoin is included in the reporting calculation.

Coinpanda adjusts the calculated amounts in this comparison to reflect these rules. For excluded trades, the proceeds and cost basis of the amount exchanged are left out of the comparison. Fees paid in crypto may still be reported, even when the amount exchanged is excluded.

These adjustments apply to the reconciliation comparison. The underlying disposals remain in your transaction history and are still included on Form 8949.

Differences may remain due to missing transactions, incorrect classifications, or differences in pricing and fees. A difference does not automatically mean your data is incorrect.

Find where differences come from

The Asset reconciliation summary breaks down reported proceeds, calculated proceeds, and the difference for each asset.

Where individual sale dates are available, select the view icon to review differences by date. For qualifying stablecoins reported as annual aggregates, compare the annual amounts shown in the table. A daily breakdown is not available because the form does not provide individual sale dates for those totals.

šŸ—ŗļøTimezone
When comparing transactions by date, Coinpanda uses the reporting timezone used by the broker for Form 1099-DA.

Review individual disposals

The Disposals tab shows your Coinpanda disposal transactions together with their 1099-DA Status:

  • Cost & proceeds: the disposal was reported on Form 1099-DA and cost basis was reported to the IRS

  • Proceeds only: the disposal was reported on Form 1099-DA, but cost basis was not reported to the IRS

  • Not reported: the disposal was not reported on Form 1099-DA

Coinpanda assigns these statuses automatically during the matching process. You can change a status manually if needed.

šŸ’” ā€œNot reportedā€ disposals are still included on Form 8949

ā€œNot reportedā€ means the disposal was not reported on your exchange’s Form 1099-DA. It does not remove the disposal from Form 8949 or exclude any resulting gain or loss from your tax calculations. This can apply to qualifying stablecoin trades excluded under the broker’s reporting rules.

For trades where a qualifying stablecoin is exchanged for crypto that is not a qualifying stablecoin, an information icon explains the reporting treatment. This explanation remains visible if you change the status manually. Choose the status that reflects your actual form.

āš ļøWhy the 1099-DA Status matters

Coinpanda uses the 1099-DA Status when generating Form 8949. The status determines whether each disposal is treated as reported with basis reported to the IRS, reported without basis, or not reported.

This determines the applicable Form 8949 reporting category and helps ensure your tax reports are consistent with the information your broker reported to the IRS.

Fix differences and re-run matching

If you find missing or incorrect Coinpanda transactions, correct them before continuing. Common issues include missing transactions, incorrectly classified transfers, or incomplete account imports.

After making changes, select Re-run matching to compare your current Coinpanda transactions with the extracted 1099-DA data again.

šŸ’”Re-run matching

Re-run matching does not re-process your PDF. It recalculates the 1099-DA Status for your disposals and will overwrite any status changes you made manually on the Disposals page.

Use Re-process 1099-DA on the Review Data page instead if you need to re-process the uploaded PDF.

If the remaining difference can be explained by the broker's reporting of Form 1099-DA and your Coinpanda transactions are otherwise correct, the two proceeds values do not necessarily need to match exactly.

Generate reports

Once you have reviewed the reconciliation results, resolved any relevant differences, and confirmed the 1099-DA Status of your disposals, select Continue to proceed to Generate Reports.

From there, you can generate Form 8949, Schedule D, and TurboTax files using your reconciled Coinpanda data. IRS forms are provided as PDF files, while TurboTax downloads are provided as a ZIP file containing the required files.

You do not need to make the reported and calculated proceeds match exactly if any remaining difference is understood and your Coinpanda transaction data is correct.

If you are unsure about a remaining difference, contact Coinpanda support before generating your final reports.
